Yamuna Ferry Service to Launch Before Chhath Puja, Announces Delhi CM Gupta

Delhi is set to launch its new Yamuna ferry service, “Namo Yamuna,” just in time for the Chhath Puja celebrations, which run from November 13 to 16. Announced by Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, the service aims to enhance the festive experience by providing scenic views of the river and ghats along the route.

The ferry will operate on a five-kilometer stretch between Sonia Vihar and Jagatpur, offering a one-hour cruise for passengers. Tickets are expected to be priced at around ₹500 per person. The initiative not only seeks to facilitate transport along the Yamuna but also aims to develop the area as a recreational and religious destination, allowing families to enjoy the riverside environment and partake in Chhath Puja’s traditional offerings.

During a recent site inspection at Sonia Vihar Sports Club and Sur Ghat, CM Gupta reviewed the preparations for the upcoming launch and the development of the area. The Sur Ghat, where many Chhath Puja activities will take place, is being transformed into a picnic spot for families.

The ferry project, initially slated for a February 20 launch, faced delays due to incomplete work. The vessel, Island Boats 40 (IB 40), was constructed by Mumbai-based Inspiration Marine Pvt Ltd. It features a catamaran-style hull designed for stability in the Yamuna’s shallow stretches. The jetties along the route will offer boarding facilities, ticket counters, and waiting areas to accommodate passengers.

This new service is part of a broader initiative to promote the Yamuna riverfront as a cultural and recreational hub, aligning with the city’s efforts to enhance urban mobility and tourism.
