India clinched the Asian Games men’s cricket gold medal by defeating Pakistan in a thrilling final at Korogi Sports Park in Nisshin, Japan. With a 19-run victory, India successfully defended their title, further cementing their dominance over Pakistan in T20 internationals.
India set the stage for their victory by posting an imposing total of 211/6. The innings was marked by a rapid start from Abhishek Sharma, who hit a quick half-century, propelling India to 81/2 in the Powerplay, their highest against Pakistan in T20Is. Despite a mid-innings slowdown due to effective bowling by Pakistan’s Arafat Minhas, Ahmed Daniyal, and Abrar Ahmed, India rebounded with a crucial late innings assault by Tilak Varma.
Tilak Varma’s unbeaten 51 off just 22 balls, alongside Shivam Dube’s 27, resulted in a 62-run partnership that drove India past the 200-run mark. Pakistan faced a challenging target of 212 but responded with a strong effort, led by Hasan Nawaz, who scored an unbeaten 96 off 51 balls. His partnership of 87 runs with Saim Ayub put pressure back on India.
However, India’s bowling attack managed to regain control at critical moments. Washington Sundar’s exceptional 18th over disrupted Pakistan’s momentum, while Jasprit Bumrah kept the pressure on in the penultimate over. Facing a daunting task of 33 runs needed in the final over, Pakistan couldn’t close the gap as Shivam Dube successfully defended the target, sealing the win for India.
This victory not only secured another Asian Games gold medal for the Indian men’s cricket team but also reinforced their competitive edge in the T20 format against Pakistan.
