India-Canada Trade Surges as Modi’s Canada Visit Approaches

Merchandise trade between India and Canada has surged, registering double-digit growth in the first eight months of 2026. This upswing reflects a renewed momentum in bilateral economic relations ahead of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s scheduled visit to Canada in December.

During this period, Canada’s merchandise exports to India reached CA$3.03 billion, marking a significant 36.7% increase compared to the same timeframe last year. The main contributors to this growth were metals and minerals, which comprised 41% of the shipments, and agri-food products, accounting for 16.9%.

Meanwhile, Canada’s imports from India totaled CA$7.05 billion, reflecting a 10.2% year-on-year rise. In 2025, the figures stood at CA$3.9 billion for Canadian exports to India and CA$9.7 billion for imports from India.

The strengthening of trade ties is further supported by high-level discussions and business initiatives. Notably, a Canadian trade delegation consisting of nearly 300 participants secured 34 commercial agreements valued at approximately CA$300 million. These agreements span sectors such as energy, critical minerals, and aerospace.

Both nations are also advancing negotiations on a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA), with five rounds of negotiations completed and further discussions planned to conclude the agreement by December. The aim is to expand trade, investment, and cooperation in areas such as mobility.

In preparation for Modi’s visit, discussions between him and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney have been ongoing, focusing on enhancing bilateral relations. Officials from both countries continue to work on expanding their economic ties, demonstrating a concerted effort to bolster bilateral trade and investment.
