Assam CM Sarma Announces BJP Rallies to Counter Congress’s Institutional Criticism

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has announced a series of rallies across the state, organized by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), to take place from October 13 to October 31. These rallies aim to oppose what Sarma describes as efforts by the Congress party to undermine democratic institutions in India.

In a press briefing in Guwahati, Sarma stated that the rallies would be held peacefully at district headquarters. The objective is to show support for Prime Minister Narendra Modi and bolster public confidence in constitutional bodies such as the Election Commission and the Supreme Court. Sarma accused Congress and other opposition parties of using political tactics to challenge these institutions.

The chief minister also criticized Congress’s stance against the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, arguing that this process is crucial for addressing issues related to voter lists and illegal immigration in Assam. He further targeted Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, claiming that Gandhi applies inconsistent standards to election results based on the winning party. Sarma condemned Gandhi’s actions concerning the Supreme Court, insisting that political pressure should not affect constitutional institutions.

The BJP stated that the planned rallies would focus on supporting democratic institutions and challenging Congress’s approach to electoral and constitutional matters. This announcement comes amid heightened political tensions between the BJP and Congress over electoral processes, the independence of institutions, and immigration-related issues in the state.
