While in Doha, Rijiju met with Qatar’s current leader, Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani. He conveyed the heartfelt condolences of the Indian government and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, underscoring the profound respect and regard India holds for the late Father Amir.
Rijiju lauded Sheikh Hamad as a visionary figure who was instrumental in Qatar’s progress and in fortifying the strategic partnership between Qatar and India. He noted that the Indian community in Qatar deeply mourns his loss and cherishes his contributions with immense respect.
Additionally, Prime Minister Modi had earlier paid homage to Sheikh Hamad, recognizing him as a true friend of India who played a pivotal role in enhancing bilateral relations. In honor of Sheikh Hamad’s legacy, India observed a day of national mourning on July 13, 2026, during which the national flag was lowered to half-mast on government buildings, and official entertainment was paused.
