Jaishankar Highlights India’s Role as a Strategic Middle Power Amid Global Shifts

In a discussion highlighting the evolving role of middle powers in the global arena, India’s External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar described India as a “power in the middle” with a significant $4 trillion economy and a population of 1.4 billion. Speaking at the Bloomberg New Economy Forum alongside Canadian Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand, Jaishankar emphasized the importance of countries with shared interests collaborating to navigate a changing global order.

Jaishankar noted that middle powers are increasingly assessing their national interests by developing independent policies and forging partnerships to address shared challenges. He cited initiatives like the Quad and the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC) as examples of strategic and economic collaboration. This reflects a broader shift in global governance where more countries are seeking to influence international affairs while maintaining strategic independence.

The conversation followed Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney’s call for middle powers to unite in protecting multilateralism and adapting to shifts in the international system. Jaishankar echoed this sentiment, stressing the need for closer engagement among such nations to identify areas of aligned interests.

Minister Anand also advocated for a more active leadership role for middle powers in shaping the international order. She highlighted Canada’s approach through trade agreements, security partnerships, and participation in multilateral platforms like the G7. Anand argued that coordinated efforts could bolster national strategic autonomy, support shared interests, and enhance the resilience of supply chains.

The forum underscored the growing significance of cooperation among middle powers as they face geopolitical tensions, economic uncertainties, and the reformation of global alliances. Both ministers underscored the need for strategic collaboration to respond effectively to emerging security challenges and strengthen economic resilience.
