India and Switzerland Enhance Trade and Mobility with Five New Agreements

India and Switzerland have taken significant steps to bolster their bilateral relations by signing five agreements aimed at enhancing cooperation in trade, technology, and mobility. The agreements were finalized during discussions between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Swiss President Guy Parmelin on Monday, with a focus on expanding collaboration in various sectors, including defence, nuclear energy, and investment.

The agreements cover key areas such as migration and mobility, young professionals, transportation, and technology transfer. A notable component is the migration and mobility partnership, which seeks to combat irregular migration and human trafficking while providing multiple-entry visas of up to five years and renewable permits for students. Additionally, the young professionals exchange agreement will allow up to 300 individuals from each country to gain temporary employment and cultural experience annually.

In the realm of defence and technology, India and Switzerland have agreed to explore increased cooperation in military exchanges, defence production, and nuclear energy. Both nations aim to launch joint research projects in sectors like health, clean energy, and space, and will promote collaboration in transportation technologies, sustainable infrastructure, and electric vehicles.

The agreements also align with Switzerland’s commemoration of the first anniversary of the India-European Free Trade Association (EFTA) Trade and Economic Partnership Agreement, which aims to boost investment, trade, and employment between India and the EFTA countries. Improved market access is expected to support Indian exports of agricultural products, pharmaceuticals, textiles, and engineering goods, while encouraging Swiss investment in biotechnology, life sciences, and other sectors.

Beyond bilateral cooperation, the leaders discussed global and regional issues, including the conflicts in Ukraine and West Asia, emphasizing the need for dialogue and diplomatic efforts to support peace and stability. These discussions underscore the broader commitment of both countries to addressing international challenges collaboratively.
