India and Denmark are poised to enhance their strategic partnership with a focus on green energy, trade, and maritime development. During a recent visit to Mumbai and New Delhi, Denmark’s Business Minister Martin Lidegaard engaged in discussions with Indian officials to explore new avenues for economic collaboration. The talks centered on renewable energy, sustainable shipping, and bilateral trade, reflecting the growing importance of India as a strategic and commercial partner for Denmark.
The two nations are working on the next phase of their Green Strategic Partnership, established in 2020. A new joint action plan is being crafted to boost cooperation in sectors of mutual economic and environmental interest. In Mumbai, Minister Lidegaard visited APM Terminals, part of the Danish shipping giant Maersk, and engaged with Maharashtra Governor Jishnu Dev Varma to discuss investment possibilities.
In New Delhi, discussions with Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal focused on expanding bilateral trade and strengthening economic ties, particularly in the context of a proposed India-European Union free trade agreement. The presence of over 200 Danish companies operating in India, employing more than 100,000 people, underscores the robust economic relationship between the two countries.
Sustainable maritime development was another key topic during the visit. Talks with Union Ports and Shipping Minister Sarbananda Sonowal addressed environmentally friendly shipping practices, modern port infrastructure, and the establishment of green maritime corridors. These discussions highlight the shared commitment to advancing sustainable shipping solutions.
Renewable energy cooperation also took center stage. Conversations with Renewable Energy Minister Pralhad Joshi focused on improving energy efficiency, enhancing clean energy infrastructure, and supporting India’s shift toward a more sustainable power system. Denmark’s role as an international partner in solar energy development, including its contributions to the International Solar Alliance, further strengthens this collaboration.
The reinforced partnership between India and Denmark is anticipated to open new avenues for investment, technological exchange, and sustainable development, further solidifying the economic ties between the two nations.
