Malaysia is currently seeking approval from Nepal to send DNA experts to assist in identifying victims after severe floods and landslides wreaked havoc in the area. According to Foreign Minister Mohamad Hasan, the country has formally requested permission to deploy these specialists, with the DNA identification process set to commence following the conclusion of ongoing search and rescue operations. The Malaysian team intends to match DNA samples from recovered bodies with those collected from families of missing citizens.
The Malaysian authorities have already gathered DNA samples from the families of 55 Malaysians who remain unaccounted for due to the natural disasters. Given the urgent need to bury some recovered bodies swiftly due to limited facility availability, the role of DNA testing becomes crucial in confirming identities.
An 11-member team from Malaysia is prepared for the mission, equipped with 12.4 tonnes of rescue gear. This includes advanced detection tools, communication systems, high-capacity drones, and equipment specialized for tunnel rescues. Additionally, they are bringing along a four-wheel-drive vehicle and a 10-tonne truck to aid in the operations.
Malaysia is hopeful that the combined efforts of search, rescue, and DNA identification will lead to the discovery of missing victims and offer families the much-needed closure regarding the fate of their loved ones.
