The relationship between Iran and India has been characterized as “long-standing” and “historic” by Iran, following a meeting between Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit. Esmail Baghaei, spokesperson for the Iranian Foreign Ministry, emphasized Tehran’s commitment to strengthening ties with New Delhi, particularly in the realms of trade and economic cooperation.
During their discussion, the leaders focused on several key issues, notably the Chabahar Port, which remains a pivotal area of collaboration. Both leaders also shared perspectives on regional developments and the pursuit of lasting peace. Modi reaffirmed India’s dedication to enhancing its longstanding partnership with Iran across multiple sectors.
The conversation between Modi and Pezeshkian also touched upon the ongoing regional situation, with both countries exploring diplomatic avenues aimed at fostering peace. This high-level engagement underscores the depth of the bilateral relationship, which both nations appear eager to nurture further.
The meeting has not gone unnoticed by the United States. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio remarked on the sovereignty of countries to chart their own foreign policy paths. However, he also cautioned against any actions that might aid Iran in circumventing U.S. sanctions, highlighting the complexity of international diplomatic relations.
