India Commits to Safeguard Tech Trade Amid US Russia Sanctions Bill Approval

India’s trade and economic strategies face potential disruption as the US House of Representatives passes a sanctions bill that could impose tariffs of up to 100% on major importers of Russian oil. The legislation, known as the Lindsey O. Graham Sanctioning Russia and Iran Act of 2026, targets countries maintaining significant trade ties with Russia, including India, China, Slovakia, Hungary, and Azerbaijan.

In response to the legislative move, India has vowed to take all necessary measures to safeguard its trade interests. The Ministry of External Affairs emphasized India’s commitment to energy security for its 1.4 billion citizens, reassuring that it will continue leveraging a diversified energy mix based on evolving market dynamics. The Indian government has proactively engaged in dialogue with US officials to mitigate the potential repercussions of the proposed sanctions.

The bill, which passed the House with a 262-159 vote, had already cleared the US Senate and now awaits presidential approval to become law. If enacted, these measures could significantly affect India-US trade relations and have broader implications for global energy markets. Concerns have been raised about the impact on India’s trade with the United States, one of its significant energy suppliers, despite recent efforts by India to diversify its energy sources by increasing imports from countries like the United States and Venezuela.

India remains a major buyer of Russian crude oil, a relationship that is now under scrutiny given the potential for tariffs. The Indian government has indicated that it will work closely with domestic trade and industry groups to navigate any economic fallout from the legislation.

The proposed sanctions come amid a complex geopolitical landscape, with the US aiming to exert pressure on countries maintaining trade with Russia and Iran. The situation underscores the interconnectedness of global energy markets and the delicate balance countries must maintain in their trade relations.
