In a recent address, Chief Justice of India (CJI) Surya Kant reassured the public, particularly the youth, that the Supreme Court remains steadfast in its mission to uphold citizens’ rights and ensure justice is served through appropriate legal channels. This statement comes amidst a backdrop of student protests and accusations of police misconduct.
The Chief Justice emphasized that the Supreme Court is committed to considering any properly filed petition, underscoring that access to justice is open to all citizens. He assured that the court will act to deliver justice wherever it is justified, thereby addressing the concerns raised by the ongoing demonstrations.
Clarifying previous misunderstandings, CJI Surya Kant stated that the Supreme Court had not declined to hear related matters earlier due to the absence of a formal petition. He explained that only a representation had been submitted, which does not fulfill the legal criteria for judicial review. His remarks aimed to clear up any confusion regarding the court’s willingness to engage with the issue.
Following the submission of new petitions that allege police excesses during the protests on July 20, the Supreme Court has scheduled a hearing for Monday. The CJI also warned against misleading reports that suggested the court had refused to consider the case, highlighting the importance of accurate reporting.
