Keir Starmer Finalizes Tech-Driven UK-India Trade Deal, Then Resigns

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, in a significant diplomatic achievement, successfully finalized the long-anticipated India-UK Free Trade Agreement (FTA) just before stepping down from his role. During a pivotal meeting with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the G7 Summit in 2026, the two leaders agreed upon July 15 as the date for the implementation of the India-UK Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA). This agreement is poised to significantly boost the already substantial trade relationship between the two nations, valued at approximately £48 billion annually.

Throughout his tenure, Starmer was a staunch advocate for strengthening ties with India, making the trade agreement a central goal of his administration. He emphasized the economic opportunities the deal would create, citing India’s growing influence in the global economy and the advantages of facilitating easier and more cost-effective trade between the UK and India. His efforts reflected a broader strategy to foster closer economic and diplomatic relations with India.

Since taking the helm of the Labour Party following its electoral defeat in 2019, Starmer focused on rebuilding connections with the British Indian community and advancing a robust partnership with India. Under his leadership, the Labour Party committed to enhancing collaboration with India across various sectors, including trade, security, education, technology, and climate change initiatives.

Before entering the political arena, Starmer had a noteworthy legal career, serving as the Director of Public Prosecutions. His political journey saw him rise to the position of Prime Minister after Labour’s decisive election victory in 2024. However, despite initial achievements in stabilizing the economy and driving domestic reforms, a series of policy challenges and political setbacks gradually eroded his standing within the party.

In a heartfelt resignation address, Starmer acknowledged the growing sentiment within his parliamentary party that he was no longer the right leader to take Labour into the forthcoming general election. Accepting their decision with humility and appreciation, he concluded his tenure, marking the end of a notable era in British politics.
