The Indian government has initiated dialogue with US authorities to address the ramifications of recent changes to American visa regulations that could impact Indian students and academic professionals. This development follows the introduction of stricter residency rules by the US Department of Homeland Security, affecting holders of F, J, and I category visas, which are designated for international students, exchange visitors, and media professionals.
During a media briefing on Friday, Randhir Jaiswal, spokesperson for India’s External Affairs Ministry, confirmed that New Delhi is actively monitoring the situation. He assured that the Indian government would persist in addressing any issues faced by its citizens with the US administration. The revised US policies now enforce fixed periods of stay for non-immigrant visa holders in these categories, replacing the previous system that permitted extended stays without ongoing federal supervision.
One significant change under the new regulations is the reduction of the grace period for F visa holders after they complete their studies. Students must now adhere to a 30-day timeframe, reduced from 60 days, to either depart the United States, transition to another educational institution, or adjust their immigration status. This alteration could potentially affect the plans of many Indian students pursuing education in the US.
Indian officials have acknowledged that visa and immigration policies fall under the jurisdiction of each country, underscoring their sovereign nature. Nonetheless, they reiterated India’s dedication to supporting its citizens abroad and mitigating any challenges arising from the updated US visa rules. The Indian government remains committed to ensuring minimal disruption for its nationals as they navigate these changes.
