WhatsApp is set to transform user interaction on its platform with the introduction of a new privacy feature that allows communication through usernames rather than phone numbers. This significant update is being gradually rolled out, enabling users to reserve their unique usernames in advance of a comprehensive global launch planned for later this year. The innovation promises greater privacy, as individuals can initiate chats using only usernames, keeping their mobile numbers private.
Upon availability, users will be able to create a distinct handle within the app, eliminating the need to share phone numbers for communication. A built-in generator will suggest alternative options if a preferred username is already taken. Importantly, there will be no public directory of usernames, ensuring that only those who know the exact username can make contact, thereby enhancing user privacy.
Users can check the availability of usernames by updating the WhatsApp app and navigating to Settings, then Account, and finally Username. The rollout of reservations is happening in phases, with notifications appearing in-app as the feature becomes accessible in different regions. This early reservation phase is crucial given WhatsApp’s vast user base, making popular usernames highly sought after.
To further safeguard user privacy, the username system will incorporate an optional “username key,” offering an additional security layer. This key can be shared separately, allowing users to control who can initiate conversations with them. The feature is designed to benefit not only individual users but also creators, businesses, and public accounts, enabling them to align their WhatsApp identity with handles on other platforms like Instagram and Facebook.
While WhatsApp is enthusiastic about this new feature, it assures users that adopting usernames is entirely optional. Those who prefer the traditional method of using phone numbers can continue to do so. As the feature becomes available across different regions, users will receive notifications within the app.
