Bollywood Icon Nana Patekar Passes at 75, Leaving Lasting Legacy

Veteran actor Nana Patekar, renowned for his intense performances and ability to portray complex characters, passed away at the age of 75 in Goa on October 8, 2026. Patekar’s career, spanning nearly five decades, challenged conventional Bollywood norms and left a significant impact on Indian cinema.

Born Vishwanath Patekar in Maharashtra in 1951, Patekar began his film career in 1978 with the Hindi film “Gaman” and gained greater recognition with his role in “Aaj Ki Awaz” (1984). The film “Ankush” (1986) further solidified his reputation as an actor capable of delivering emotionally intense performances. His work in Mira Nair’s “Salaam Bombay!” was widely appreciated, and he won the National Film Award for Best Supporting Actor for “Parinda.”

Patekar’s career trajectory saw him transition from supporting roles to becoming a leading actor in films like “Tiranga” and “Krantiveer,” with the latter earning him the National Film Award for Best Actor. His directorial debut, “Prahaar” (1991), showcased his versatility and gained a dedicated following over time. Throughout the 1990s and 2000s, he balanced lead and supporting roles, displaying a range that was difficult to categorize.

His versatility extended to comedy, with films like “Welcome” (2007) highlighting his comic timing. Patekar’s filmography also includes notable works such as “Bluffmaster!,” “Phir Hera Pheri,” “Hattrick,” “Ab Tak Chhappan,” “Rajneeti,” and the Marathi film “Natsamrat,” reflecting his contribution to both Hindi and Marathi cinema.

Patekar’s career was not without controversy. In 2018, actress Tanushree Dutta renewed allegations of sexual harassment against him related to the filming of “Horn ‘Ok’ Pleassss.” Patekar denied the allegations, and Mumbai police filed a closure report citing insufficient evidence. This controversy became part of the broader #MeToo movement discussion in India.

Despite controversies, Patekar remained a respected figure in Indian cinema, known for his distinctive acting style and commitment to diverse roles. His legacy is marked by performances that emphasized character depth, intensity, and emotional authenticity, influencing generations of actors and securing his place as one of India’s most distinctive performers.
