India has emphasized the importance of maintaining peace and tranquility along its border with China as a fundamental aspect for fostering further development in bilateral relations. This position was articulated by National Security Adviser Ajit Doval during his meeting with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi in Beijing. The meeting represented the 25th round of discussions between the two nations’ special representatives, focusing on their protracted boundary dispute. The agenda included discussions on advancing boundary delimitation, improving border management, and enhancing cooperation across the frontier.
During the talks, both countries positively assessed the progress achieved in their bilateral relations and explored strategies to sustain stability along the Line of Actual Control. They reiterated their commitment to seeking a political resolution to the boundary issue, aligning with their long-term national interests. The dialogue follows the progress made after a 2024 understanding between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping, which aimed to ease tensions in the Ladakh sector. Since this agreement, there has been a resumption of people-to-people exchanges, the Kailash Manasarovar Yatra, and border trade via designated routes.
Ajit Doval highlighted that bilateral relations were gradually returning to normalcy, attributing this improvement to the maintenance of peace along the border. Meanwhile, China expressed that the boundary issue should be contextualized within the broader relationship between the two nations. While neither side disclosed significant details about the progress in demarcating the contested boundary, both countries agreed to continue negotiations. The next round of special representative talks is scheduled to take place in India in 2027.
These discussions gain additional significance as they precede the anticipated visit of Xi Jinping to India for the BRICS summit in September. This upcoming event underscores the importance of stabilizing and strengthening bilateral relations further.
