Tech-Enhanced Rath Yatras: ₹5 Lakh Grants for 60 Committees in West Bengal

In a significant move to preserve cultural heritage, the West Bengal government has allocated financial assistance of ₹5 lakh each to 60 Rath Yatra committees across the state. This funding aims to support the restoration and maintenance of historic chariots, marking the first instance of direct state funding for Rath Yatra festivities. Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari highlighted the urgency of renovating many of these traditional wooden chariots, some of which are centuries old, and encouraged committees to utilize the funds for their repair and preservation.

Beyond the financial support for chariots, the state has orchestrated a unique aerial display for the upcoming 30-km Shravan Yatra at Tarakeshwar in Hooghly district. Helicopters will shower flower petals on the devotees participating in the event, adding a celebratory touch to the pilgrimage. Additionally, the government plans to establish Seva Kendras at 75 fair locations to ensure that pilgrims have access to essential services such as medical aid, police assistance, and drinking water.

Looking ahead, the West Bengal government intends to expand its financial support to include more Rath Yatra committees in subsequent years. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to enhance the state’s religious tourism infrastructure. A significant investment of ₹1,000 crore is planned over the next three years to develop the Bengal Shaktipeeth Circuit, which is designed to promote pilgrimage, restore historic temples, and boost the state’s appeal as a destination for religious tourism.

The funding for Rath Yatra committees and the development of the Bengal Shaktipeeth Circuit underscores West Bengal’s commitment to preserving its rich cultural and religious traditions. By supporting the restoration of historic chariots and enhancing the infrastructure for pilgrims, the state is taking concrete steps to safeguard its cultural heritage for future generations while also fostering tourism and economic growth.
