During recent discussions in Ottawa, Mark Carney hailed the proposed free trade agreement with India as a “game changer,” emphasizing its potential impact. Meeting with India’s commerce minister Piyush Goyal, Carney highlighted the potential benefits of the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) for Canadian workers and businesses, particularly in the energy, agriculture, technology, and education sectors. Both leaders expressed optimism about finalizing the agreement within the year.
Piyush Goyal, who conveyed greetings from Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, focused on enhancing long-term bilateral cooperation and expediting trade negotiations. Canada’s international trade minister Maninder Sidhu was also part of the talks, and it was confirmed that two rounds of negotiations have already been completed. The next round is set to take place in Canada, marking progress in the trade discussions.
A significant business delegation from India, comprising over 100 representatives, is accompanying Goyal on his visit to Canada. This delegation is engaged in trade and investment discussions scheduled in Toronto, aiming to foster stronger economic ties between the two nations.
In addition to trade talks, Goyal met with Canadian foreign minister Anita Anand and agriculture minister Heath MacDonald. These meetings are part of broader efforts to deepen cooperation across multiple sectors, reflecting a renewed momentum in India-Canada relations.
This positive development in diplomatic relations comes after a period of tension in 2023, which arose from accusations concerning the killing of Khalistan figure Hardeep Singh Nijjar in Canada. India rejected these accusations, which were made by former Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. Relations have seen significant improvement since Carney assumed office in 2025, leading to the relaunch of CEPA negotiations and renewed diplomatic engagement between the two countries.
