Iran Fires Warning Shot at Gulf Energy Sector After Historic Israeli Strike on South Pars

Iran fired a warning shot at the Gulf’s energy sector on Wednesday — a warning backed by specific target names and evacuation orders — after Israel carried out a historic strike on the South Pars gasfield. The Revolutionary Guards declared facilities in Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and Qatar were legitimate targets and ordered immediate evacuation. Oil prices surged toward $110 a barrel as the warning raised fears of a sweeping energy infrastructure war.

South Pars holds the world’s largest natural gas reserves and is shared between Iran and Qatar. The Israeli strike — reportedly with US authorization — was the first time Iran’s fossil fuel infrastructure had been directly targeted in the conflict. Washington and Tel Aviv had previously treated Iranian energy assets as off-limits, but that restraint had now been abandoned, triggering Iran’s most detailed and threatening military response of the war.

Iran’s state broadcaster named Saudi Arabia’s Samref refinery and Jubail complex, the UAE’s al-Hosn gasfield, and Qatar’s Mesaieed and Ras Laffan facilities as targets for strikes within hours. All workers and residents were told to leave immediately. Governor Eskandar Pasalar of Asaluyeh said the US-Israeli strike was “political suicide” and declared the conflict had entered a “full-scale economic war” phase.

Oil climbed to $108.60 per barrel — a nearly 5% rise — while European gas benchmarks surged more than 7.5%. Gulf oil exports had already been cut by 60% from pre-war levels due to sustained attacks and Iran’s stranglehold on the Strait of Hormuz. Iran had continued to export its own crude unimpeded through the strait while preventing Gulf neighbors from doing so. The threat of Iranian strikes on Gulf energy facilities raised fears of a further catastrophic supply disruption.

Qatar’s government spokesperson warned that targeting energy infrastructure endangered global energy security, the environment, and the lives of millions. With a warning as specific, public, and time-bound as any issued during the conflict, Iran’s declaration carried a weight that markets and governments could not ignore. The world now waited to see whether the warning shot would become something far more destructive.
