Instagram Removes DM Encryption: Voices From Both Sides of the Debate

Meta’s decision to remove end-to-end encryption from Instagram direct messages by May 8, 2026 has produced a sharp division of opinion. The company disclosed the change through a low-key help page update. Here is a look at what those on both sides of the debate are saying.

Encryption on Instagram was introduced in 2023 as an opt-in feature following Mark Zuckerberg’s 2019 commitment. The feature never gained widespread adoption, and Meta now says this is why it is being discontinued.

After May 8, Meta will have access to all Instagram DMs. The company had previously been unable to read messages of users who had chosen encryption. This restriction is now being lifted.

On one side, law enforcement agencies including the FBI, Interpol, and national bodies in the UK and Australia argue the change will make Instagram safer. Child safety organizations support this view, citing the threat of online exploitation. Australia reportedly deactivated the feature ahead of the global deadline.

On the other side, digital rights advocates like Digital Rights Watch describe the move as an erosion of user protection. They argue that removing encryption without alternatives exposes users to both corporate surveillance and potential government access. Both sides agree, however, that the question of how to protect privacy and safety simultaneously remains unresolved.
