Mark Zuckerberg’s Metaverse Spent $80 Billion Fighting Human Nature — And Lost

Human nature does not yield to investment. Meta is shutting down Horizon Worlds on VR — off the Quest store by March, off all VR by June 15 — after close to $80 billion in losses. Mark Zuckerberg’s metaverse ultimately spent four years and an extraordinary fortune fighting human nature — the tendency to prefer familiar tools, convenient interfaces, and social environments where other people already are. Human nature won.

The preference for familiarity is deeply rooted. People adopt new technologies when the benefit of the new clearly outweighs the cost of change — when the smartphone was obviously more capable than the feature phone for tasks people cared about, adoption was rapid. When the benefit is incremental or abstract, adoption stalls. The metaverse offered immersion — a genuinely valuable form of richness. But immersion is not something most people felt they lacked or urgently needed.

The preference for convenience is equally powerful. VR headsets require more from users than any consumer device since early home computers — physical setup, software configuration, spatial awareness, and a tolerance for the social awkwardness of wearing a dedicated device. Horizon Worlds could not overcome these friction costs for users who did not already find VR compelling. Monthly user counts in the hundreds of thousands confirmed that the friction was too high for the mainstream.

Reality Labs spent close to $80 billion trying to reduce friction and increase the perceived benefit. Layoffs of more than 1,000 employees in early 2025 acknowledged that the effort had not shifted human behavior at the scale needed. Meta’s AI pivot reflects an alternative approach — integrating AI into the tools and interfaces people already use and like, rather than asking them to adopt an entirely new interface paradigm.

Fighting human nature is always expensive. The metaverse demonstrates what it costs when a company of Meta’s scale and resources commits to the fight. AI’s early success, by contrast, comes partly from working with human nature rather than against it — making existing tools more powerful rather than replacing them with something unfamiliar. That alignment with natural inclinations may be the most important competitive advantage AI holds over the metaverse.
