Can Strength Really Lead to Diplomacy? Zelensky Bets His Nation’s Future On It

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is betting his nation’s future on a single, powerful doctrine: that overwhelming strength is the only path to real diplomacy with Russia. He made this case forcefully to US President Donald Trump in a pivotal phone call on Saturday, seeking the means to turn his high-stakes bet into a reality.
The entire conversation was built around this central premise. Even as he congratulated Trump on the Gaza peace deal—a victory of negotiation—Zelensky insisted that for Ukraine, the context is different. “There needs to be readiness on the Russian side to engage in real diplomacy,” he stated, before delivering the core of his belief: “this can be achieved through strength.”
This is a significant gamble. It posits that rather than de-escalation, a massive build-up of defensive—and potentially offensive—capability is what will ultimately bring an end to the war. He is arguing that only when the cost of conflict becomes unacceptably high for Moscow will the Kremlin genuinely seek peace.
Zelensky sought to get his most powerful ally to underwrite this bet. The discussion about “concrete agreements” to strengthen Ukraine’s air defense was a direct effort to acquire the “chips” needed for this high-stakes geopolitical poker game. He is asking for the tools to call what he sees as Russia’s bluff.
The future of Ukraine now hinges on whether this doctrine proves correct. Zelensky has clearly defined his strategy and, following this “productive” call, appears to have secured the backing of the United States. The world now watches to see if this bold bet on strength will indeed pave the way to peace.
