How to “Feed” Your Liver: 7 Foods a GI Expert Recommends

A gastroenterologist and nutrition expert has explained how to “feed” your liver the right nutrients with a list of seven specific fruits and vegetables. These foods provide the compounds the liver needs to thrive.
The expert explains that you can feed your “gut-liver axis” with cranberries. Their polyphenols act as prebiotics, nourishing the good bacteria in your digestive system, which in turn supports the liver.
You can also feed your liver’s fat-processing pathways with beetroot. The doctor notes that its betaine content is a specific nutrient that “helps the liver process and move fat out of liver cells.”
The list also includes foods to feed your circulatory system. Watermelon with lime (citrulline and vitamin C) and beetroot (nitrates) both support nitric oxide production, which promotes healthy blood flow to the liver.
You can also feed your body’s metabolic and anti-inflammatory systems. Raspberries and apples with cinnamon support blood sugar and lipid levels. Pomegranates help calm inflammation. Strawberries with dark chocolate (70%+) feed your blood vessels with flavanols.
